Former WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero committed suicide in a Venezuelan jail early Monday morning. Just Sunday, he told a security guard he had stabbed his 24 year-old wife to death in the room they were sharing. This clearly made him the prime suspect in the murder, and Valero was taken into custody by police. He was found Monday morning after hanging himself from a bar in his jail cell with his own clothing. Despite showing signs of life when he was found by authorities, Valero could not be revived and his suicide marks the third such death by a famous boxer in the last nine months. Last summer, Alexis Arguello died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the chest and weeks after that, Arturo Gatti strangled himself.
