Reporting from Washington —
An effort to extend benefits for the long-term unemployed stalled Tuesday on Capitol Hill when the Senate voted 45-52 to block the $140-billion catchall bill that also would delay a Medicare fee cut, extend a hodgepodge of expiring tax cuts, and includes other provisions that Democrats say will help stimulate job growth.

Although the bill also included tax increases on investment managers and oil companies to help offset the cost, it has run into opposition from Republicans as well as many Democrats who are worried about adding to the burgeoning budget deficit.

The vote to block the bill came on a motion to waive budget rules to allow it to pass — a motion that would have required 60 votes. Eleven Democrats and one independent — Joe Lieberman of Connecticut — joined 40 Republicans in voting against the waiver.

Here's what I don't get. They already passed the extenders bill through the end of the year months ago...it was just a small matter of funding bits of it. Now it's as if the initial passing of the bill never happened.

There have been so many different versions over the last few months I've lost track.

It's sad that its come to this. For Democrats they are betting everything that the economy recovers. After Nov. the majorities will be all but gone and we will have gridlock til 2012.

Democrats will not be able to use legislation to improve the economy because they won't have the votes. In essence, the Democrats are about to hand all legislative advantage to the Republicans, no bills will pass and few laws will change...and there is absolutely nothing Democrats can do to stop it.

What Reid is gambling on is that somehow the economy will turn around on its own.

If Reid is wrong and we have a double-dip, the Republicans will do what they always do- nothing. Harry Reid and the Democrats will be stuck. They won't get any legislation through and Republican blame them.

So I don't understand how Dems think they can go into any election with 25 million people unemployed.

but this is the democrats fault? The Dems don't want jobless benefits? I believe that the GOP has opposed any and all jobless benefit extensions. Let 'em be homeless and starve!!!

Guess the Dems shouldn't have given $1 Trillion to Health Care Reform. Who needs health care if you can't even put food on the table!!!

Looks like the realization has finally dawned on them that we are broke!

I'm trying to figure out how taking UI out of the economy makes the economy stronger?

If there is billions of dollars removed from the economy won't unemployment go up, won't the weekly ave./hrs worked go down, as wages falls and spending drops won't things just keep getting worse?

When there is no growth, government is the only entity that help, it if removes ten billions of dollar from a fragile recovery it will stall and collapse.

As my dad just said, "why are these Senators so concerned about their jobs, it's not like they need them or they will be on the street?"

At least my Senator (Boxer) voted correctly. I can only imagine if Fiorina was in there voting and whining about UI benefits.

I don't think lawmakers have a clue, all they are thinking about is reelection and unfortunately some people will just be casualties because the lawmaker's need to keep their job is more important the public service.
